Pang, Ying & Lor Yang of Yang Farms

Lauren Rae Holtermann

CYCFM: Where Are you from?

PY:
My parents are originally from Laos.

CYCFM: When and why did you begin farming?

PY: Our farm is located in Toone, TN.  My parents have been farming since they were children in Laos.  They lived in a small collection of poor villages and farming was every villager's job. The villages were too poor to have shops so everyone farmed for a living whether it was raising crops, cattle, or building straw/wood homes.

CYCFM: What is your favorite crop to grow?

YP: Our favorite crop to grow is Asian greens & herbs (lemongrass, kaffir lime leaf, sawtooth herb, etc).

CYCFM: What is your favorite dish to eat?

YP: One of our favorite dishes to eat is freshly baked fish stuffed with herbs partnered with homegrown sticky or jasmine rice and a choice of boiled greens.

CYCFM: How do you relax?

PY: Ying and Lor (Pang's mother and father)watch Thai soap operas 1-2x a week as a way to relax. But if it rains, they go fishing.

CYCFM: What is your favorite part about the Cooper Young Community Farmers Market?

PY:
My favorite part about the market is the atmosphere and the authenticity of vendors. You can really tell if someone grew or made something if you have the eye for it.
